Agentic AI for growing businesses: where to start
AI agents can do far more than answer questions. Here's a practical way to find the first workflow worth automating, and how to do it responsibly.

Most teams have now tried a chatbot. Far fewer have put an AI agent to work: software that understands a goal, uses your tools and completes a multi-step task with a person in the loop where it matters.
The difference is big. A chatbot tells a customer how to change a delivery address. An agent checks the order, updates the address in your system, confirms with the customer and logs what it did.
Start with the work, not the model
The best first agent isn't the most impressive one. It's the one attached to a workflow that is:
- Frequent: it happens dozens or hundreds of times a week.
- Rules-based enough: a new team member could learn it in a day.
- Low-risk to get wrong once: mistakes are easy to spot and reverse.
- Measurable: you know how long it takes today.
Customer support triage, invoice matching, lead qualification and internal policy questions are common winners.
Build in guardrails from day one
Responsible agents are designed, not bolted on. We recommend:
- Clear limits on which tools and data the agent can touch.
- Human approval for anything costly or irreversible.
- Logs of every action so you can audit and improve.
- A simple way for users to reach a person.
Measure, then expand
Run the agent alongside your team for a few weeks. Compare speed, accuracy and customer satisfaction. Once the numbers are clear, you'll know exactly where the next agent should go.
